Some of the most notable universities in the United States; and globally, are referred to as Ivy League Schools or Honorary Ivy League Members. These universities regularly feature in movies and form a large part of the cultural zeitgeist of the United States. In this blog we will explore the types of universities that feature in this group, the admissions requirements and the history of Ivy League Schools.

The term Ivy League is still a new concept when comparisons are made to their European counterparts. The term Ivy League only came into existence in the 1950’s during a National Collegiate Athletic Association {NCAA}event.

The term Ivy League made specific reference to a university’s academic integrity, global ranking, competitive admissions process, and the prestige attached to the specific institution. A more general sentiment shared amongst former and current students would be a sense of social and cultural ‘elitism’.

In the 1950’s the founding members of this prestigious group included the following universities:

Brown University

Columbia University

Cornell University

Dartmouth College

Harvard University

Princeton University

Yale University

•The University of Pennsylvania

These universities remain the only official members of the Ivy League; however, serval other institutions are considered honorary members based on the founding criteria established in the 1950’s. The Honorary Ivy League members include the following members / universities:

• Massachusetts Institute of Technology {MIT}

•California Institute of Technology

Historically, the United States is still a new country when observations are made to their European and Asian counterparts. Interesting, several of the original Ivy League Schools came into existence in the 1770’s. These universities pre-date the American revolution.

The Ivy League have not included any additional universities within their group since its formation in 1954. Ivy League Schools have successfully marketed themselves to a domestic and international audience ensuring an imbalance exists between the supply of places and the demand in student applications. This has enabled Ivy League schools to justify their notoriously high student fees and help attract significant local, state and federal funding from governments, NGO’s, benefactors and famous alumni.

Times Higher Education {THE} World Rankings features three Ivy League Schools in their Top-10 and six Ivy League Schools in their Top-20 universities. Ivy League School rankings in 2021 / 2022 can be found below:

Typically, students will be required to achieve a score of 1380 – 1420 in their SAT test and / or 30-33 in ACT to have a chance of gaining admission.
