Studying a nursing qualification comes with several advantages, some of which can be found below:

  • Attractive starting salary
  • Opportunities for career progression
  • In-demand jobs
  • Permanent residency & citizenship opportunities
  • Well respected job
  • Continuing demand for nursing
  • Ageing population {globally}
  • Not necessary to have an undergraduate in nursing
  • Globally recognized qualification
  • Opportunities to transfer skills and knowledge into other jobs and industries

The health and nursing sector received significant publicity in recent years due to the COVID-19
pandemic. Consequently, western governments have increased their spending on health care and
nurses have benefited greatly as a result.

Did you know? Several universities offer Graduate Entry Nursing programs which do not require
students to have a nursing background.

The significant growth in applications to nursing related degrees can be attributed to increased job
availability within the market. Before selecting your choice of university and study destination make
sure the qualification received provides the necessary accreditation to practice in your chosen field
of study. A Bachelor of Nursing studied in India {or other countries} is not equivilant to an overseas
nursing qualification. Therefore, alternate pathways will need to be considered. The three main
pathways for nursing students are outlined below:

Bachelor of Nursing:

Students commence their studies on a Bachelor of Nursing following successful completion of high
school. This is the most popular option for nursing students. Typically, a Bachelor of Nursing is
between 3-4 years in duration depending on the study destination and the requirements for an
internship or work placement as part of the program. Students will learn the theoretical and
practical knowledge required before entering the work force. Most universities follow a similar
curriculum with the basic principles of nursing covered, these include the following:

  • Fundamentals of Nursing
  • Science for Nursing
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Nursing & Wellness
  • Clinical practice

Graduate Entry Nursing

Graduate Entry programs allow entry to candidates who have an undergraduate degree in an
unrelated discipline. However, if there is little synergy between your current job or your
undergraduate degree it’s unlikely you will meet the entry criteria to obtain a student visa. Most
Graduate Entry programs will require at least 60% from your previous studies. A health science
related degree is preferable. In most instances you will be eligible to work as a nurse full time
following course completion. Each country requires their students to complete a minimum number
of hours in a clinical setting.

Master of Nursing

A Master of Nursing {or equivilant} is an ideal qualification for those with prior nursing experience.
Many students pursue a Master of Nursing to help with career progression. This qualification also
allows entry into the world of academia or research should students receive the pre-requisite
grades.

The qualification couples a higher-level degree with enhanced learning outcomes, this will allow
nurses to specialize in a particular field should they choose. In most instances students are not
required to study a full 2-year program as RPL {Recognition of Prior Leaning} is provided. However,
students should study the required amount to benefit from a post study work visa.

Once you have completed an accredited nursing qualification it’s time to start work. A range of fields
can be considered from a nursing perspective, these include the following:

  • Acute care hospitals
  • Children’s hospitals
  • Trauma and emergency care
  • Mental health nursing
  • Aged care
  • Community nursing
  • Palliative care
  • Nome care nursing
  • Drug and alcohol centres Operating rooms and other surgical settings
  • Rural and remote nursing
  • International health
  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Clinical research trials

Please note, to gain admission into a Nursing degree students must demonstrate a high level of
English. Students should aim for an IELTS 7.0 no band score lower than 6.5.

Please consider the location of your studies. It’s important that the university and study destination
selected has close links with industry and can place you in a job near your residence. Therefore, large
metropolitical cities are the choice for most nursing students.
