A Pre-Master’s Program can also be referred to by the following names:

  • PMP {Pre-Master’s Program}
  • PQP {Pre-Qualification Program}
  • Graduate Entry Program
  • Graduate Certificate Program
  • Graduate Diploma Program

For the purposes of this blog, we refer to all Pre-Master’s Programs as PMP. A PMP offers students increased choice and flexibility when selecting their choice of university and study abroad destination. A PMP provides entry into a variety of fields depending on the university, these include:

  • Arts & Humanities
  • Business
  • Engineering
  • IT
  • Medicine & Health Sciences*

A Pre-Master’s Program allows students entry into a postgraduate program where a direct application may not be possible. Several reasons exist why students are not eligible for direct entry, these include:

  • Insufficient grades or GPA from their undergraduate studies
  • Significant number of backlogs from their undergraduate studies
  • Age of the candidate
  • Work experience of the candidate
  • Date the undergraduate was completed
  • English Language Proficiency
  • The course duration is not equivalent to studying abroad
  • Students shifting their field of interest/study
  • Students who are studying overseas for the first time and require smaller class sizes and increased academic support

Don’t worry if you fall into any {or several} of the categories above, it’s likely a PMP Program is the right option for you. A Pre-Master’s Program helps students successfully transition from their country of origin to an overseas education where differences in pedagogy, language barriers, and cultural nuances exist.

In most instances, a PMP does not provide credit toward future studies. Therefore, students will be required to commence their primary course from the beginning of their course following the successful completion of the PMP. However, in some instances universities will provide partial or full credit for studies undertaken during the PMP program; thus, saving you time and money.

Students should note that a minimum grade will be required to progress; this will be evidenced on the offer letter and is usually a minimum of 50-60%. In addition, students should demonstrate a high level of attendance.

The duration of the PMP program is dependent on the university and the program of choice. A PMP varies between 3-12 months, the majority of universities require students to study at least 1-semester full-time. Those studying a PMP program in a medical or health sciences-related field will require a longer study duration.

Students entering a PMP based {solely} on their English language proficiency are advised to undertake English in their country of origin and apply for direct entry once they achieve the pre-requisite grades. Whilst a PMP provides entry for students who achieve an IELTS of 5.0-5.5, there is an increased risk of a visa rejection when any course is packaged. Students should avoid visa rejection at all costs.
