Did you Know? Canada announced its intention to double its migration by 2025 with Indian nationals and those from the subcontinent most likely to benefit.
When questioned by reports the immigration minister; Sean Fraser, stated ‘“We have not seen such a focus on economic migration as we’ve seen in this immigration plan…we cannot maximize our economic potential if we don’t embrace immigration”

History of the CGPA {Cumulative Grade Point Average}
The CPGA system came into effect in 1972 when a Cambridge university professor wanted to quantify how his students were performing in class. The CGPA system was used to continuously test and monitor performance and was subsequently used to benchmark against future student intakes.
What is a CGPA?
The CGPA helps universities and government bodies to monitor and assess overall academic performanceat all levels of education. The government of India has established the University grants Commission {UGC} to oversea the benchmarking and monitoring of the CGPA system. The CGPA system is used for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs including non-award programs and micro credentials
How to Measure a CGPA?
The CGPA is an average of all the grade points and units undertaken during your studies. It helps balance your areas of strength with any weaknesses you have in a particular discipline. The calculation usually results in an overall grade
within two decimal places. The calculation is straight forward and demonstrated below:
Students can benefit from the CGPA system which is relied upon in India. Some of the many benefits including the following:
1) Continuous Mapping &Assessment: Students are not provided a final semester or final year grade. Rather, a student’s performance is continuouslymonitored with a CGPA that remains in a state of flux throughout the year. Benefits of the CGPA system
2) Weaknesses &Strengths: The CGPA system allows you to see what your areas of strength and weakness are. This use of continuous assessment allows you to focus your time and energy into specific units which you might find problematic whilst limiting the time you spend on areas you find less challenging
3) Effective Time Management: The system allows students to manage their time more effectively and reduce the risk of continuous stress throughout your studies.
4) Pedagogical Approach: The CGPA allows students to be less reliant on a final exam towards their overall grade. An overall CGPA should also account for a student’s presentation skills, group engagement, assignmentsand coursework.
5) Improved Teaching: The CGPA system allows teachers to be more flexible in their approach to teaching and will highlight early any problems students are experiencing in advance.
The differences between the standard GPA {Grade Point Average} system adopted by many universities and countries and the CGPA system can be found below:
GPA {Grade point average} | CGPA {Cumulative grade point average} |
Calculates the performance of a single unit or semester / term. | Calculates the performance of a student across all units and semesters throughout the semester / year |
GPA = Total Points achieved divided by Total Credits Attempted | CGPA = Sum of {credit x GPA} of all semesters divided by the total number of credits in all the semesters |
Converting your CGPA
When universities assess your application, they will convert your CGPA into a percentage or grade. The calculation used is fairly standard and used by most study abroad destinations. Follow the steps below to help you convert your CGPA.
- Calculate the sum of grade points for all the subjects
- Divide the sum of grade points by the total number of subjects. You’ll get your CGPA
- Finally, multiply the CGPA calculated by 9.5 to get the percentage equivalent.
Most universities use a 10-point scale or an overall percentage.
How to convert CGPA to marks
For students wanting to convert their CGPA into an overall percentage they can use the following equation below to find the correct score.
CGPA X 9.5 XSum of Maximum Marks in each subject/100
For example, if you received a CPGA of 7 in your final transcript and the total marks possible were 450, you would calculate using the following equation:
7 X 450 X 9.5 / 100 = 299/450
