Students who select the United States as their preferred study destination will need to meet criteria set out by the government. For more detailed information about the types of documentation permitted by the United States government click here. Follow the steps below to successfully apply for a US student visa: 

  1. Obtain an I-20 from an approved SEVP provider.  

  2. Pay the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee online, keep a receipt of all payments.  

  3. Complete the DS-160 form online

  4. Once complete print the application confirmation page.

  5. Schedule a biometric appointment and consular interview.

  6. A $160 visa fee will be taken upon arrival at the US embassy or consulate. 

  7. The biometric appointment requires students to appear in person to have their photograph and fingerprints scanned. 

  8. During the consular interview students will be asked a series of questions about their choice of course, college, finances, and intentions following course completion. If the official is happy with the interview you will be issued a stamp and student visa. 

Students must supply a Statement of Purpose to prove their intention to travel to the United States is for study purposes only. Students should state their intention to return to their home country at the end of their course or after their PSW {Post Study Work} visa expires. The areas that need to be addressed prior to visa lodgement are as follows:

  1. Outlining the reason {s} for selecting the United States as a study destination. 

  2. Outline reasons for selecting the university and city. 

  3. Circumstances in home country, including economic ties.

  4. Details of any members of family currently residing in the United States   

  5. An undertaking that you will not burden the State, and agree to leave the United States prior to the expiry of your student visa. 

  6. If your previous studies do not correlate with future studies you must provide a valid reason for this and furnish evidence to justify and support a change in study plan. 

  7. Account and evidence any study gaps between your last period of full time education and any future application to study in the United States. 

  8. Detail any previous visa rejections and your recent travel history. 

  9. Any other relevant matters.

You must demonstrate direct access to a source of funds that will cover your tuition fees and living expenses whilst overseas. The funds do not have to be liquid but the source of funds will need to be identified. 

Proof of Funds

  • Tax returns for the past 3 years {Form 16}.

  • Bank statements / passbook for the past three years.

  • Original pay / salary slips and letters of employment.

  • Statement from certified chartered accountant.

  • Scholarship letter {If applicable}.

  • Education loan approval sanctioned by a recognised bank
